“There’s been a rash of installers scoring a soundbite or two on HGTV lately. Cinema Design Group International (CDGi) in Boca Raton, Fla., landed two of its custom-designed theaters on a show entitled “Spoil Yourself with Home Theatres,” which aired in late January (one theater is shown right). The 30-minute episode featured 10 theaters that seat six to 15 guests. “We’ve never had national TV coverage,” says president Brad Bergoine, “so this was a great opportunity.”

Once the HGTV production team contacted CDGi, Bergoine assembled the details and submitted five theaters for consideration. “We did an email blast to our dealer base and some clients, sent out a press release and posted it on our website and Facebook page,” Bergoine says about the television coverage.

“While we didn’t get local press coverage, we got a lot of nice calls from dealers and a few clients … In the bigger picture, this is key to the CEDIA channel –that a non-industry media source is committing time to the [home theater] category.” To see CDGi’s HGTV footage, visit its website at cinemadesigngroup.com.

Also jumping on the TV-coverage bandwagon is JL Audio –a manufacturer of high-end auto, home and marine audio loudspeakers and electronics. JL Audio is scoring national TV time as the exclusive audio equipment supplier for the cable TV show “Unique Autosports: Miami,” which is hosted by celebrity car customizer Will Castro (shown left, bottom).

“My clients and team demand JL Audio,” Castro says, “because you have to have the best in order to have the best. My team is desgining and creating the best sound systems for my clients. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Guest stars on the eight-episode show on SpikeTV, which aired on Feb. 28, include N.Y. Yankees stars A.J. Burnett and Nick Swisher, NBA players LeBron James and Amare Stoudemire, and Sean “Diddy” Combs and hip-hop artist Fat Joe.

Boca Raton, FL - CDGi has taken the input from our dealers and that of our Manufacturing Representatives to work on the one category they feel has been missing from the dedicated home theater category. One of the largest obstacles for dedicated home theaters has been the perception that to build a good sounding home theater it would take a budget in excess of $100K

That’s all about to change with the introduction of CDGi Indie line of Theater Designs and Seating. We have created this line to provide a total solution for the entry level home theater category. Our goal was to develop this program to provide a complete package that would allow our dealers to offer their clients great sounding, great looking home theaters complete with all electronics (from dealer’s line card) from $20,000.

Carey Schafer, CDGi’s Vice President of Engineering states “The CE market is working through a very difficult time and has requested a cost effective and thoroughly thought out solution to the entry home theater experience. We have created and now offer the Indie Theater option starting at under $10,000 for acoustic treatments including seating.

The Indie will include two primary designs – the Tribeca and the Sundance - with the following range and variations for dealer/client consideration.

Designs are based on room sizes from as small as 14’x18 to 22’ x 28’. Complete turnkey with all acoustical panels, bass traps, front acoustical wall treatment, minimum of 3 theater style seats.
Once the room dimensions and equipment list have been confirmed the engineering team of CDGi will provide a basic AutoCAD drawing of all panel locations, speaker placement complete with cut out locations if utilizing flush mount speakers. Complete project management to work in conjunction with the dealer on project schedule for delivery of acoustical products, bass traps, cloth and any other items prior to theater installation. CDGI is providing a complete set of installation instructions for the dealer to complete and use their internal labor resources.

CDGi Dealers receive exclusivity on entire CDGi Line.
There will be NO INTERNET SALES FOR DEALER PROTECTION AND MARGIN.

Indie Line of Theater Seating
This addition to the CDGi product line is another result of our listening to our outside sales staff and certified dealers. The market conditions in seating has become increasingly competitive
Schafer continued. “We have resisted the lower cost price point due to most products that can fit into this category either have inferior components or are import from locations such as China, Mexico and South America - CDGi is happy to report this entire line will be built in the USA”.

September 1, 2009, Boca Raton FL:

What do you get when you mix Blue and Green?

CDGi introduces its new Turquoise environmentally friendly acoustic panel at the CEDIA Expo in Atlanta this month.

“In our continuing mission to define how luxury can be green, CDGi is launching an acoustic panel that at its core is manufactured from recycled denim material – that’s right ‘Blue Jeans Baby” states Jeff Galea the companies CEO.

The printed outer decorative fabric skin is manufactured with 100% recycled polyester. The ink used in printing the custom panels is derived from non-solvent based pigmented dyes. The company offers several other decorative fabric options that cover the cotton acoustic core. The Turquoise Recycled Cotton Fiber Acoustic Treatments can contribute to earning LEED credits.

The new Turquoise panels are truly “green” reducing the ecological footprint of acoustic treatments and our dependence on fossil fuels, including foreign crude oil. The new family of custom panels is designed with the environment in mind, and retains the long life, durability and acoustical properties for which CDGi is known for. CDGi Turquoise panels are manufactured without harmful Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which are reported contributors to global warming.

The new panel, as well as the entire CDGi line of theater accessories, is made in the USA.

New York Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett likes things big and powerful. He has a big contract and powerful cars. So a big and powerful home theater was a no-brainer.

A Runco 1080p DLP projector and a superwide 104-inch Stewart Filmscreen CinemaScope display, combined with a 7.2-channel surround-sound system consisting of high-end B&W loudspeakers, an Integra A/V processor and a 7-channel McIntosh amp certainly provide a robust home theater experience.

“The sound is amazingly full, and he can play it as loud as he wants,” says Elliott Wier of audio/video installation company Gramophone in Timonium, Md. “The McIntosh amp and B&W speakers will take it.”

With some help from Cinema Design Group International (CDGi), Gramophone also provided the star pitcher with a tastefully refined space trimmed with luscious cherry woods and soothing tones.

The process of retrofitting this space for a home theater didn’t come without some nasty curveballs, however. The first challenge was accommodating Burnett’s 6-foot-4-inch frame in a theater with a 7½-foot ceiling. That doesn’t seem so bad until you consider that a video projector has to be mounted somewhere.

“We reverse-engineered the room,” says Wier. “We put the projector over the bar area so he wouldn’t hit his head on it, and then we determined the throw distance to the screen and built a false wall for it.”

Ah, but if a person’s height were the only challenge. Another hard-to-hit pitch was access to the space down a tight, winding stairway that prevented large objects to be brought into it. The CDGi chairs, the columns and acoustical panels all had to be built to go down the stairs in two pieces. The starfield was made from drop-ceiling iSky panels, and acoustical absorption panels are used all around.

Gramophone also had to relocate some bulkheads for plumbing and the like, which are hidden in arches leading to the theater. A 15-by-20-foot lobby was added later in the process.

In the theater, the center-channel B&W speaker and two 10-inch Velodyne subwoofers fire from behind the paneling below the screen, while two B&W left and right front-channel speakers sound from the sides of the screen. Side and rear B&W surround speakers are situated behind the wall fabric as well. A Crestron home control system with an 8.4-inch wireless touchpanel operates the works, including a Blu-ray player, satellite receiver and the Lutron Grafik Eye lighting system.

One of Burnett’s favorite things about his new off-season getaway? The Kaleidescape movie server that stores his family’s many kid movies. It makes this theater a winner.

Below are images of the original concept by CDGi that decided the direction for the room.

So when a client of Boca Theater & Automation came to them with a challenge of converting an office into a dedicated home theater with a deco theme; the company partnered with Cinema Design Group International to complete the interior design requirements.

The first challenge was the clients desire to have a set of glass doors which would allow light into the room, never a good idea for a theater. We suggested a type of door which would become opaque when energized. The placement of the doors would cause a hard acoustical reflection on the right at the “First Reflection Point” so getting the room to not sound off balance was a significant challenge which was met with a combination of absorptive and diffusive elements on the opposite wall and surrounding the doors.

The next challenge was the clients need to have an office at the back of the room and the wish to keep the rear window. This is not a large space so we had to work with every inch to provide for 2 rows of seats and his desk and ample cabinets. The rear window was covered in a split element door set which matches the side elements beautifully.
